Announcement For consultancy work

Rift Valley Children and Women Development Organization (RCWDO) was established in 1993 and is currently registered as Ethiopian Resident Charity. RCWDO operates mainly in vulnerable and marginalized areas of Central Rift Valley and Southeastern pastoralist and agro-pastoralist areas located in eight zones (including West Wellegga zone) and 37 districts of the Oromia Regional State of Ethiopia. In addition to this, RCWDO had implemented a number of programs and projects in these districts focusing on interventions ranging from improvement in the household livelihood systems to different social development activities. 

As part of overall organizational objectives, RCWDO has also been implementing climate Smart agriculture   project entitled” “Everyone Deserves the Chance for a Secure Future – Promoting Inclusive and Forward-Looking Agriculture (PIFLA)” in East Bale zone at Dawe-Kachen and Rayitu woredas for three years from December, 2022 to November 2025 donated by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in collaboration with HelpAge Germany and HelpAge Ethiopia country office. One of the major / key components of this project is apiculture and marketing. As part of this project component, ten honey producers cooperatives that constitutes   575 HHs (poor, older persons, PwDs) were targeted to ensure increase income & resilience of HHs through improved apiculture as an integral part of livelihoods of the communities as part of the larger agricultural development activities and strategies of the government. These targeted beneficiaries will be strengthened to improve their apiculture production system as well as facilitating market opportunities for other community members.

In promotion of improve apiculture production, one of the challenges is lack of sustainable market linkage. To address this challenge, it was intended to conduct comprehensive honey value chain and marketing assessment within the larger apiculture production system. This study shall focus on the structures and functions of honey value chain and marketing system targeting specifically two pastoral woredas in East Bale zone of Oromia region and examining all linkages of actors both at regional and national level. 

Hence, RCWDO has intended to undertake Study on Honey Value Chain Analysis and Market assessment in” Rayitu and Dawe kachan” of East Bale zone. The organization wants to hire competent consulting firm including at least three persons experienced on   the study of Honey Value Chain Analysis and Market assessment. Hence, RCWDO is taking a bid based on clearly justified budget in relation to the study. The overall objective of the study is to review the existing honey production and marketing system; existing potentials and opportunities; and identify reliable marketing strategy to improve value chains to address the existing challenges of traditional beekeepers through sustainable approaches and there by contribute to improve livelihood of the community adaptative to climate change extremes/ vulnerabilities. 

Specific Objective of the study  

• To review the existing and potentials of honey value chain and map out the key actors and challenges including their roles in two selected woredas and zonal levels

• To improve the efficiency and competitiveness of honey value chain by addressing identified issues and implementing relevant strategies for sustained engagements

• To identify the existing knowledges and good apiculture production practices for sustainable value chain development

Competence of the consultant 

At the minimum, the consultant(s) must possess the following: 

• At least MA/MSc degree in in forestry / apiculture, natural resource development. 

• Experience in livelihood and socio-economic study, business development and agricultural value chain development and marketing, Business Administration, Marketing, Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness or in a related business fields

• Have skilled and experienced key staffs with good knowledge of local context and Afaan Oromo.

• At least three team of consultant with gender position is a requirement

• Knowledge and experience in working with apiculture and marketing development and related businesses in Ethiopia. 

• Proven experience of developing honey value chain in Ethiopia. 

• Excellent understanding of the Ethiopian honey supply Chain (local and national). 

• Clear understanding and experience in private sector development and the role of the private sector in the development of effective honey value chain for smallholders. 

• Good analytical skill and organizing the report in English;
