About Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) 

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) is a medical research institute established in 1970 by the Government of Ethiopia in collaboration with Save the Children Organizations of Norway and Sweden, and University of Bergen. It was named after the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). ARHI was initially established to investigate the pathogenesis and human immune responses of leprosy. However, it undertakes medical research in a wide range of diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, antimicrobial resistance, HIV various cancers, and other non-communicable conditions. The Institute focuses on responding to emerging and re-emerging diseases through health research and innovation. In addition, the Institute also places due emphasis on research on non-communicable diseases vaccine research and development and traditional and modern medicine. The research activities are organized and carried out under seven Research Directorates. 

Background and purpose of the vacancy:

AHRI in collaboration with local and international partners is planning to undertake a project entitled ” Impact of a cryptosporidiosis point-of-care test-and-treat strategy in children with diarrhoea (CryptoT&T) “. The project is funded by the Global Health (GH) European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) 3 and is a collaboration between partners in Ethiopia, Norway and Mozambique.  We are looking for are looking for dedicated and highly motivated Researcher /Biostatistician with relevant experience to work on the project to provide Biostatistical support and work on key client deliverables through design clinical trial/ implementational and or experimental studies. He/she will work independently and executing the programming and project standard to support related projects. The biostatistician will be based at the Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases Research Directorate (CNCDRD).

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of statistical analysis plan for trial projects and conduct analyses for project database and including sample size/power calculations and data management 

  • Provides consultation to investigators and researchers on experimental design and statistical research approaches and scientific standards.

  • Consults with investigators and other researchers   to formalize analysis plans and advises on choice of statistical analysis strategies, 

  • He/she will ensure reliability of measurements and identifiability of models, and interpretation and presentation of statistical results.

  • Revise the design and trail related methodologies throughout the project implementation and support scientific research activities within clinical and experimental Research project 

  • Oversees or develops enhancements to statistical software by programming new techniques; maintains knowledge of current and emerging trends in statistical analysis and related trail methodology.

  • Perform quantitative methods (statistical and/or mathematical modelling) and take leadership of a project data management 

  • Ensure quality of project outcome and explain the research activities and achievements to third parties, such as scientific communities and contribute to the dissemination of research outputs through scientific conferences and peer reviewed journals

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Biostatistics/Statistics with Strong mathematical or statistical skills in quantitative data modelling and ability to conduct research utilizing large datasets.

  • Demonstrable experience of large clinical database research ideally with practical experience of leading health research projects/clinical trials from start to completion

  • Analysis and dissemination of real-life research from large-scale experimental and clinical trial studies.

  • Expertise in advanced statistical principles (nonlinear mixed effects modelling, Bayesian statistics, clinical trial simulations, estimands, missing data imputation.

  • proficiency in Statistical analysis using Stata, R, Python and other advance tools 

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills 

  • Experience working in international collaborative research teams and multidisciplinary fields and environment.

  • Strong record of research activities relevant to the post, including publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with authorship of at least 10 peer reviewed publications.

Terms of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability
