Job Description
Research Triangle Institute (RTI) is a US based international organization, registered and licensed in Ethiopia by the Agency for Civil Society Organizations as a foreign non-governmental organization with certificate license number 3041. RTI is supporting the government of Ethiopia through initiatives solicited from the USAID including USAID’s Act to End NTDs | East Program.
USAID’s Act to End NTDs|East program will have a three-day meeting from February 25-27,2025 in Addis Ababa. The meeting will be held in English, however, there will be Portuguese participants from Mozambique who require live interpretation. Therefore, RTI is looking for interpreters who are fluent in both Portuguese and English.
- No of interpreters Required is 3( at least 1 should be female).
Requirements:
Fluency on both languages
- Language Proficiency: The interpreters need to be highly proficient in both languages, including understanding Mozambican dialects.
- Vocabulary & Context: The ability to understand specialized vocabulary specific to global health and translate them accurately.
Real-Time Interpretation Skills:
- Interpreting speech as it is being spoken, without noticeable delay to keep the conversation flowing.
- Context Understanding: Ability to maintain context in ongoing conversations, especially for dynamic, multi-turn discussions.
- Tone and Intonation: Maintaining the tone, emotion, and intent of the original speaker.
Managing Multi-Party Conversations: Efficiently manage group discussions or meetings with multiple speakers
- Speaker Identification: Ability to distinguish between different speakers and keep track of who is saying what.
- Turn-Taking Management: Properly handling interruptions or overlapping speech in a meeting.
- Speech Segmentation: Breaking up long speeches into smaller, manageable sections for better interpretation accuracy.
Accuracy and Precision
- High Accuracy: Interpreters must avoid common pitfalls like mistranslations or confusion due to idiomatic expressions or colloquial language.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Interpreters should recognize cultural differences and provide contextually appropriate translations. For example, some expressions or phrases may not have direct equivalents between Portuguese and English.
- Specialized Knowledge: The meeting subject is global health; and specific vocabularies, and concepts will be shared with the interpreter(s) prior to the meeting.
Non-Verbal Communication
- Contextual Awareness: Interpreters should be able to read body language or facial expressions to better interpret the meaning of speech, especially when the words alone may not convey the full message.
Equipment
- Avail the equipment necessary to provide live interpretation in an indoor venue setting for 30 participants.
