Job Description

Role purpose

The purpose of this role is to provide technical support to promote VSO’s Volunteering for Development (VfD) approach. The Volunteer will work with other volunteers, staff, partners, and primary actors to deepen the impact of the VfD approach in VSO programmes; promote the uptake of global volunteering standard with partners; and engage with citizens and youth to promote and adopt the responsible and impactful volunteering. The volunteer will provide technical support to diverse partners, organisations, and networks to mainstream VfD in development and policy frameworks; and create spaces for sharing best practice and knowledge in volunteerism.

Project Background and contextual Information

ACTIVE (Active Citizenship Through Inclusive Volunteering & Empowerment) Project is a three-year grant (2022-2025) funded by the FCDO at £9M per year.  ACTIVE takes a volunteering for development approach, centred on supporting the most marginalised local people (especially women and girls, the young and people with disabilities) to engage others (including policy makers) in addressing the problems they face; and building the capacity of civil society and governments in social accountability and resilience, social inclusion & gender equality.  It aligns with FCDO priorities on promoting freedom and democracy – protecting open societies, effective governance and resilience. 

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Global Volunteering Standard and V4D National Volunteer

Responsibilities:

  • Identify opportunities for promoting global volunteering standards and support partners and VSO to integrate global standards in volunteering for development, including ways of applying the VfD approach in fragile contexts.
  • Train, mentor and coach volunteering organizations, institutions, and agencies on Global Volunteering Standards. 
  •  Lead in developing innovative mechanisms to engage with primary actors and youth to promote responsible and impactful volunteering
  • Provide strategic framework for the establishment and engagement of VfD network to mobilize, support and build capacity of Volunteer Involving Organisations (ViO) networks to ensure that the network is operating to promote responsible and impactful volunteering.
  • In close collaboration with volunteers and programme teams, lead in organization stakeholders’ engagements, dialogue and campaign initiatives using innovative mechanisms including social media and learning forums.
     

Experience and skills required for this volunteer placement (no more than 8 bullet points)

Education

BA/BSC in project management, sociology, anthropology, development studies and other related fields

Experience and Skills

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working with civil society organization working in volunteering 
  • Excellent communication skills with good command of spoken and written English, 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively convene, coordinate and communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Able to work well with a variety of individuals in a challenging cross-cultural setting.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships, inspiring confidence and credibility with communities, partners and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience in facilitating, organizing and conducting training to different partners
  • Prior experience working with different partner government and nongovernment organizations in volunteer cooperation
  • Experience in mobilizing youth network for volunteering
