Introduction
Project HOPE is an international NGO work in more than 25 countries. For more than 60 years, Project HOPE has responded to the world’s most pressing global health challenges and transformed the lives of people and communities around the world.
With the financial support of Gates Foundation, Project HOPE is implementing the “Pathways for Ethiopia” project. The purpose of the project is to understand, reach, and serve vulnerable populations in Ethiopia through applying the “Pathways” method https://www.projectpathways.org/about. Aims of the project include identifying factors that make Ethiopian women and their children vulnerable to poor Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child Health, and Nutrition (RMNCHN) services utilization and health outcome, conducting population segmentation based on the key sources of vulnerability, and intervening to effectively reach the vulnerable segments of the population. The project also envisions to build the modelling capacity within the Government of Ethiopia health system with the goal of nurturing evidence-based PH decision making.
The Pathways Ethiopia Project will be implemented in close collaboration with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) – National Data Management Center (NDMC), Ministry of Health and selected local universities. To this end, Project HOPE will place a Pathways Fellow to the National Data Management Center (NDMC) of the EPHI. The fellow will be recruited in collaboration the host institution and should be an existing internal staff of NDMC.
As part of the local capacity building activity of the project, the fellow will be supported to get enrolled in a local PhD program on parttime basis, preferably at Addis Ababa University, in relevant fields including Public Health, Epidemiology, and Biostatics. However, it will be the responsibility of the individual candidates to secure admission to a suitable academic program. If the fellow gets admitted to relevant PhD, Project HOPE will support his/her study through:
- Organizing capacity building activities on “Pathways” and other analytics/modeling methods,
- Granting access to project data,
- Assigning local mentors and academic co-supervisors, and
- Paying fair stipends during the active phase of the project.

REPORTS TO: Senior Pathways Advisor, Pathways for Ethiopia Project
DUTY STATION: Addis Ababa
DURATION OF CONTRACT: 12 months with possibility of extension
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Liaise the Pathways Ethiopia and other Project HOPE activities with the host institution.
- Engaged in core Pathways Ethiopia project activities including development of research tools, data collection and supervision, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and development of manuscripts.
- Apply pathways and other analytics/modeling exercises to support evidence-based decision making at MoH and EPHI.
- Contribute to continuous knowledge transfer to local staff within their host institution including organizing formal trainings.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Liaise Project HOPE with the NDMC EPHI.
- Actively engage in the development of qualitative and quantitative data collection tools that identify causes of multidimensional vulnerabilities to RMNCH outcomes in Ethiopia.
- Actively engage in the organizing, training and supervision of enumerators and qualitative interviewers.
- Provide support to other research activities of the Pathways Project as required.
- Organize capacity building trainings in their respective host institutions on pathways and other disease modeling approaches.
- Apply pathways and other disease modeling approach to support evidence-based decision making at NDMC/EPHI
- Regularly communicate with the Principal Investigator and Senior Pathways Advisor on the progress of the Project.
- Discharge other related duties as assigned by the Senior Pathways Advisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Candidates for this position should hold a master’s degree in relevant fields like Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics etc… from a recognized higher learning.
- Candidates should hold a five-year progressive work experience.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Willingness to travel to outside Addis Ababa including hard-to-reach and conflicted-affected areas.
