Introduction
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) conducts different researches on public health to generate and disseminate evidence based information which will improve the health of general public. Malaria is one of the public health problems in Ethiopia. Novel research and implementation of appropriate strategies are needed to tackle this global health problem.
The current project is designed to determine the Extent, Dynamics and Mechanism of Plasmodium vivax immune evasion caused by Pv Duffy Binding Protein gene amplification. Different laboratory based experiments will be done to address the objectives of this project. Blood samples using Heparinized and EDTA test tube will be collected from study participants at health facilities and community level. Then the samples will be processed for parasite cryopreservation, Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell (PBMC) and Trizol preparation before storage and further analysis.
Job requirements
- Education and Experience:
- BSc in Medical laboratory technology with Six (6) yearsβ experience OR
- MSc in Medical laboratory science with Four (4) yearsβ experience
- Who has experience of work (currently) in Arba Minch and/or surrounding area
Language: Speaking, reading and writing skills in English and Amharic is mandatory.
Duty station/location: The successful candidate will be based in study location; Arba Minch, South Ethiopia
NB: Priority will be given for candidate from Arba Minch and/or surrounding area
Responsibilities:

Receive samples from health facilities and community data collectors as per the quality requirements set by the study.

Perform malaria laboratory diagnosis using routine diagnostic methods (Microscopy and RDT).

Process samples for parasite cryopreservation.

Process samples for Trizol preparation.
- Process samples for Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell (PBMC)

Prepare DBS and Blood film
-
Properly label and store samples, and regularly monitor sample storage temperature.

Participate in data collection and samples transportation
-
Conduct regular supervision of community and health facilities data collection.

Regularly monitor the supplies and distribute for data collectors.

Ensure the quality and integrity of the data and sample collected.

Maintain good team spirit and communication with each data collector and supervisor.

Compile the daily and weekly data, and report to the PI of the project.

The Laboratory assistance (LA) should be willing to stay at the study site until the end of the contract period.
- The LA should be willing to work on the weekends

The LA should be willing to take additional responsibilities
Required Skills
- Ability to process samples for parasite cryopreservation, Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell (PBMC) and Trizol preparation

Ability to diagnose malaria parasites using routine diagnostic methods

Research data collection, entry and basic data analysis experience

Knowledge of mobile data collection methods like Redcap and ODK Collect (a plus)

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with relevant agencies and bodies involved in the implementation of the project
