Activity Background 

Urban WASH, a $44.9M USAID-funded initiative, is dedicated to advancing safe, sustainable, and resilient sanitation solutions. The development and adoption of innovative technologies for wastewater treatment and fecal sludge management (FSM) are essential for addressing growing urban sanitation challenges. This activity focuses on building the capacity of practitioners, utility staff, and private sector stakeholders to design, implement, and manage innovative wastewater and FSM technologies tailored to local contexts.

This STTA will focus on developing training resources for Innovative Technology Development for Wastewater Treatment and FSM.

Purpose of STTA

To enhance the capacity of wastewater and FSM stakeholders, including practitioners, utilities, and private sector operators, in developing, implementing, and managing innovative technologies. This activity will support sustainable and efficient sanitation solutions to address urban challenges.

Specific Tasks 

 The consultants will undertake the following activities:

Specific Tasks

  1. Needs Assessment:

    1. Review existing practices and technologies in wastewater treatment and FSM.

    2. Identify gaps in knowledge, capacity, and technology adoption among stakeholders.

  2. Curriculum Development:

    1. Develop a curriculum covering innovative wastewater treatment and FSM technologies, including their design, implementation, and management.

  3. Manual Development:

    1. Create detailed manuals and guides, including case studies and technology application frameworks.

  4. Competency Assessment Tools:

    1. Design tools to measure participants’ understanding of technology concepts and applications pre- and post-training.

  5. Stakeholder Collaboration:

    1. Work with EWTI, private sector operators, and municipal authorities to ensure training materials align with sector priorities and innovations.

  6. Validation Workshops:

    1. Facilitate workshops to refine training materials and incorporate stakeholder feedback.

  7. Training Delivery:

    1. Conduct training sessions for targeted stakeholders, focusing on practical applications and innovation in sanitation technology.

  8. Finalization and Handover:

    1. Finalize training materials based on validation feedback and deliver all content in both soft and hard copies.

Deliverables

  • Needs assessment report identifying gaps and opportunities in innovative sanitation technologies.

  • Approved curriculum for wastewater treatment and FSM technology development.

  • Comprehensive training manuals, including practical guides and case studies.

  • Competency assessment tools tailored to innovative technology scenarios.

  • Validation workshop report summarizing feedback and revisions.

  • Completion report for training sessions delivered to participants.

  • Comprehensive final report summarizing STTA activities and outcomes.

Working arrangements

The consultant will work and coordinate with Urban WASH and EWTI for training resource development, validation workshop, ToT session, and submission of deliverables.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Advanced degree in environmental engineering, WASH, or related fields.

  • Proven experience in innovative technology development for wastewater treatment and FSM.

  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and their application in urban sanitation.

  • Strong curriculum development and training facilitation skills.

  • Expertise in inclusive and sustainable approaches to technology adoption in sanitation.
