Addis Ababa University, collaborating with Emory, Hawassa, and Mekelle Universities, along with the Ministry of Health and Oromia, Amhara, Sidama and Tigray regional health bureaus, is poised to launch the Saving Little Lives (SLL) 360 project in Ethiopia, supported by the NEST360 Consortium via Rice University, USA.

The SLL360 team aims to integrate NEST360 solutions into the ministry of health’s newborn health packages for Level 2 SSNC units, These bundles will be implemented in 18 learning hospitals across five regions and scaled up to an additional 206 hospitals across eight regions leveraging existing and upcoming investments. This initiative will bolster national and regional government capacities for the widespread adoption and institutionalization of these Level 2 SSNC packages.

Addis Ababa University is actively recruiting for BMET Implementation Support Assistant to join the SLL360 program for Oromia Regional BMET implementation activities, playing a pivotal role in advancing newborn health services.

The BMET Implementation Support Assistant will work closely with the National BMET Lead and Co- Lead, Evaluation Coordinator and investigators and will be responsible for planning, implementation, and monitoring of the SLL 360 BMET interventions in selected health facilities and communities in the region. The BMET Implementation Support Assistant have responsibilities to partner with the Biomedical engineering, and clinical mentors, health facility managers, Facility based BMETs, labor and delivery, NICU and KMC care providers, and other SLL360 project staff to facilitate smooth implementation of the SLL360 activities. The BMET Implementation Support Assistant will strictly follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) and protocols laid out by the National BMET Leaders to ensure the project activities are implemented meeting high standards and high-quality data are generated.

Specific roles and responsibilities include

  • Installation & CommissioningOversee the installation, calibration, and commissioning of equipment such as incubators, phototherapy units, ventilators, and monitors in neonatal care units.
     
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of biomedical equipment, including their specifications, maintenance schedules, and operational status.
     
  • Under the guidance and support from the National BMET Lead &Co-Lead, SLL 360 co- investigators, Evaluation Coordinator and Regional Coordinator, she/he will support implementation of the SLL360 BMET activities within the facilities.
     
  • Mentoring for BMETs to improve their capacity to manage and maintain neonatal care devices effectively.
     
  • Educate healthcare staff about the importance of preventive maintenance and early reporting of equipment faults.
     
  • Routine MaintenanceDevelop and execute planned preventive maintenance schedules for neonatal medical devices to reduce downtime and ensure reliability.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or Bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering field with at least 4 years of work experience for Master’s degree & 5 years work Experience for Bachelor Degree particularly in hospital or healthcare settings.

  • Solid understanding (strong hands-on experience) of medical devices used in neonatal care, such as incubators, phototherapy units, oxygen concentrators, ventilators, and monitors.

  • Hands-on experience in BMET training and capacity building, especially in low-resource settings, is a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience working in health facilities as frontline health worker providing care for newborns and BMET in health facilities

  • Familiarity with the Ethiopian health system, Ethiopian Ministry of Health and Regional Health Bureaus preferred

  • Written and verbal fluency in English required. Written and spoken fluency in Afan Oromo and Amharic languages is required. Strong writing skills and exceptional oral and written communication skills required.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting and stakeholder engagement.
     
  • Technical SkillsProficiency in diagnostic tools, medical equipment software, and tools for troubleshooting and repair.
     
  • Training Skills: Ability to train and mentor Biomedical Engineering Technicians (BMETs) and healthcare workers effectively.
     
  • Understanding of medical device regulations and supply chain systems for consumables.
     
  • Exceptional organizational skills, ability to prioritize multiple tasks, and careful attention to detail.
     
  • Experience in Public Health ProgramsPrevious involvement in implementing or supporting healthcare programs, especially those targeting maternal and child health.
