About Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI)Â
The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) is a medical research institute established in 1970 by the Government of Ethiopia in collaboration with Save the Children Organizations of Norway and Sweden, and University of Bergen. It was named after the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). ARHI was initially established to investigate the pathogenesis and human immune responses of leprosy. However, it undertakes medical research in a wide range of diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, antimicrobial resistance, HIV various cancers, and other non-communicable conditions. The Institute focuses on responding to emerging and re-emerging diseases through health research and innovation. In addition, the Institute also places due emphasis on research on non-communicable diseases vaccine research and development and traditional and modern medicine. The research activities are organized and carried out under seven Research Directorates.Â
Background and purpose of the vacancy:
AHRI in collaboration with local and international partners is planning to undertake a project entitled ” Impact of a cryptosporidiosis point-of-care test-and-treat strategy in children with diarrhoea (CryptoT&T) “. The project is funded by the Global Health (GH) European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) 3 and is a collaboration between partners in Ethiopia, Norway and Mozambique.  We are looking for Senior Lab Engineer-Biomedical Engineer to work on the project and be part of the Engineering team of the institution.
Responsibilities:
- Liaise with Simbona Engineering PLC, a partner in CryptoT&T and coordinate maintenance and installation of LED microscopes at health facilities.
- Provide preventive and Corrective maintenance to medical and research laboratory equipment of the institution in a safe, self-directed and timely manner.
- Prepare documentation and maintain records pertaining to all repairs, replacement parts, calibrations and modifications of laboratory and medical equipment.
- Prepare new laboratory or medical equipment specifications.
- Provide installation and acceptance testing of new equipment and devices.
- Communicate with sponsors, vendors and potential customers about equipment malfunctions.
- Maintains biomedical equipment supplies inventory; anticipating needs; managing orders.
- Advice on service agreements for equipment to be serviced by external organizations.
- Utilize broad and innovative skills to work in a team environment to find solutions to challenging problems.
- Work with the teams to deliver the responsibility and plan of the Engineering team.
Qualifications:
- MSc in Biomedical Engineering and 4 years’ experience preferably in hospital or related sector; OR
- BSc in Biomedical Engineering and 6 years’ experience preferably in hospital or related sector
- Preferable if the applicant has an electrical engineering experience and backgroundÂ

- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Fluent in English Languages, both verbal and written
- Strong attention to detail and problem solving-skills
- Ability to work with others/team work.

Terms of employment:Â one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability
